I think I suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder but I know I am not in the position to self-diagnose so I will not mention this to my Psychiatrist. I have all the symptoms but I will not list them here because they're irrelivant for the question.

My Mum had never taken me to see a Psychiatrist because she did not want me to be labelled with a mental illness or disorder because my brother used to suffer from Depression and cut himself with knives and stuff. And it caused so much stress and pain for her that I think she didn't want to accept that I may have a mental problem too.

But eventually she took me to a Doctor and he referred me to a Psychiatrist and said it was urgent? Which I found strange because I don't self-harm. So I have saw my Psychiatrist and Social Worker once and my Psychiatrist said she will speak to me more next time and probably give me medication. She also noticed I had a fear of Abandonment just by speaking to me.

So when will I probably get a diagnoses? And I am not going to mention Borderline Personality Disorder but I am scared I will get diagnosed for Bi-Polar. If I did, would the Bi-Polar medication harm me? Because I am sure I don't have that. And do you have any idea why they said it was urgent? Because I never told them about my family history. Nor did I tell them I was suicidal (Which I'm not) I never even mentioned suicide. I just how I feel to my Doctor and he seemed concerned? But he looked at my medical history too (Which has no history of Mental Health but I have a history of migraines and unexplaned aches and pains and being badly underweight)

Your Dr. Probably just wants to make sure you don't wait 3 month. For an appt. I wouldn't worry about that. I felt the same way when I went for my Diagnosis. I figured they would say Bi-Polar. They did not! I was suprised. Well first you should relax a bit, stop making assumptions (I know its hard :) and let this coarse of action happen. Yes I am giving you advice that I very rarely take myself, however it IS good advice. I promise. Just go with the process, and stop looking for a diagnosis on the internet! (Yes I do that too) The internet is one of the most harmful tools to those of us with a mental illness. When you do start thinking about what if/could it be, try doing something to distract yourself. Your psychiatrist should have a diagnosis for.you the next time you go. It doesn't usually take more then 2 visits. Also if she is planning to put you on meds then she probably has a diagnosis for you. Ask her when you go. Good luck Hang in there, you will get through this:)

Im made for this sh**, first off I AM BIPOLAR, and the meds dont harm you. They make u happy, they made me a zombie til i found the right one. And the person said it was urgent because u show signs but not actual intent meaning solve the issue b4 it becomes a problem. Im underweight as well. As for the diagnosis you will get one, maybe after 3 mos, maybe a yr. It depends on the doctor. Best of Luck.

If you are not bipolar and they prescribe you bipolar meds, the meds will be bad for you and will not treat you. Borderline is completely different than bipolar and no psychiatrist/ psychologist should ever misdiagnose, but misdiagnosis does happen. By the second session, the doctor should have ruled out what you do not have and possibly diagnose you, but if your illness is less common, it may take several more sessions. The doctor should make a treatment plan which entails how many sessions it will most likely take to treat you and the appropriate medication (if need be) to take. Be cautious of taking meds. A lot of psychiatrists just want your money so they prescribe meds. Go to NAMI.ORG to find out more about mental illnesses.
