| How do I get rid of bad smell from my ferret? | |||||
|
I got him yesterday and My friend washed him yesterday but he smells bad today.. Where is it coming from and how do I stop the smell? ferrets naturally have a bad smell you will never get rid of. and ferrets should only be bathed ONCE A MONTH, did you know that ferrets have a natural oil on there skin that makes them smell that way. when you bathe them, the oils are stripped away so the ferrets body has to work double time to replenish those oils, so a ferret will actually smell even worse for a day or two after its bath. do not wash it again though!! there is a liquid you can put in the ferrets water to make them smell better. you can get it at any pet store. you can keep the cage in a well ventillated area, clean the litter box as MUCH as you can, and clean the actual cage once or twice a week. enjoy tour ferret :] ferrets are natually smelly animals do to scent glands they have. donot constantly bathe him as it will dry out his skin and make the smell worse (the glands will work overtime) you should have researched ferrets before getting one he will always smell bad theirs nothing you can do dont evn try. DONOT spray him with perfume you could kill him ferrets wash themselves and ingesting that could and probably will kill him oratleast make him incredably sick. The more you bathe your ferret the smellier they will get. After you give them a bath, they produce more of their musk. You can buy ferret spray to make them smell prettier, but in a few days they shouldn't stink so bad. Their smell can also be improved by keeping the cage clean and changing the bedding regularly. Usually, ferrets smell worse a day or two after a bath (bathing strips the oils from their skin, thus their bodies overproduce them in the days following). Just wait it out. Make sure to bathe them (at the most) only once a month or so, no more than that. Also, look for a soap-free shampoo (I recommend Hi-Lyte. Can be purchased at the vet. It is full of conditioners and fatty acids and doesn't make the ferret smell worse--they just smell really, really good :) ). Washing him will not help! It will actually make it worse! It has to do with their glands so it does make it worse when you clean them. Ferret naturally smell bad. Just make sure to clean his cage well and give him a bath every other month or so and that should be fine. Well, DO NOT use febreez ON your ferret. It can be harmful to them. When you adopt a ferret from a store by law they must be fixed & descented. They still have a slight natural musky odor, but what makes the odor stronger is caused by the food they eat.. I feed my 3 fuzzies raw food and they have NO ODOR AT ALL. you can't even tell I have ferrets in the house, even if you are in the same room with them. If feeding raw food (properly) is not an option, try a product called "Bi-Odor" for ferrets. It's a liquid you squirt in their water to deodorize them from the inside out. Lots of people say it works fairly well. Only bathe a ferret once a month if necessary. Yes, they do have a stronger aroma after a bath! Wash their bedding (sleep sacks, hammocks etc), at least once a week. Keep their cage cleen daily and scoop their box at least 2x a day, morning & evening. Try useing "Feline Pine" litter or the generic brand of Pine Litter for their litter box. That will help you alot as well. Smells really good, turns to sawdust when it gets wet, easily disposed of and wont harm the ferrets in any way. The ferret.com forums have some great ideas and pictures of enclosed litter boxes. DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF SHAVINGS (pine, cedar etc.) as bedding in a cage for ferrets. The dust can cause upper respiratory problems. Old towels and jeans, and sweatshirts they can burrow in work better for the bottom of the cage. For more info on feeding raw go to: http://holisticferret.proboards80.com/in... for more info on ferrets: http://forum.ferret.com/ They are with ferret.com where you can get fantastic deals on any ferret supply. Low shipping too. Also try www.ferretcentral.org Good luck-Ferrets are wonderful little creatures if you just take the time to learn a little more about them. His odor will be a natural result of what he is eating. An animal can also change its scent quite naturally as an environment is changed. He/she may be under a bit of stress from the new place ~ with time and a change in diet you'll find the odor be different. The animal must feel comfortable however. When you wash a ferret it stimulates their oil glands which is what smells. Only wash a ferret once in a while otherwise use dry powder for washing and keep the cage and area clean. The ferret will always smell musky but it should not be overpowering. ask or call a few local vets:is he/she able to do this surgery:remove the scent-glands from the ferret. Our vet does this, also castrate him in the same time(neuter him) otherwise, not much you can do,they smell! sorry, you can cover it up for a while, but that smell is there to stay. It is just part of their makeup. Ferrets are not a good idea for your home. They are cute and fun but they will stink up your whole house. i think they just naturally smell... unless he has a desease like mine did, we only had him for a few days before we had to get rid of him, but maybe hanging a car freshner or someting near him will work? they are from the skunk family, they aren't meant to be domesticated. You want the pet you have to deal with the smell, even after a bath they will stink an hour later, trust me. Those are pheromones let off by the ferrets glands, there is nothing you can do to stop him from releasing them, im not sure if veterinarians can remove them, but that would be cruel ooh ferret well if you cant stand the smell then i suggest that you return it it's it's natural body odor maybe you can put those air freshingin thingies on the room? its natural so you can get these drops that you put is their water that creates their pours to open up and breathe trust me it helps ask ur local pet shop Its natural body odour, you can't really get rid of it put a 3 a fresheners in ur room and 1 in its cage. and then put a small tub thing full of soapy water for ur ferret Did your friend wash it with ferret shampoo? If not i would try that. Sorry, that is all I can thiink of. Give him away or change his cage more often or even litter train him like i did to my rabbits!!! My aunt has three ferrets and her house smells great! She uses those Air Wick plug-ins. dont u have to have it ummm thingied like i dont no wot its called but spayed or sumin like tht Check to see if he got into something. Maybe he just needs daily bathing. I dunno :D never can stop that smell.....that is their ferret's signature smell.....u can use shampoo to keep away.....but it still come back......that what make ferret special..... *willy laughs* Wash it properly. bury him and the smells coming from his poop shoot wash him in vinegar febreeze is a life savor!!! fabreez febreeze perfume
