| Does anyone else own a Tokay Gecko? | |||||
|
I'd just like some handleing tips.i can put my hand in and out of his tank with no reaction out of him.i would eventually like to hold him.I do know that it will take time. I have one. I handle him with a leather glove and a lot of patience. Usually as soon as I touch him he grabs the glove and doesn't let go for anything. When I put him back I usually have to leave the glove in the tub with him and about an hour later get it back after he's let it go. Really sucks when it's time to clean his tub since I only have one glove. So I can't put him in the spare tank I have to hold him and do everything one handed. Unless I manage to convince him to go into the plastic cup in which case I just cover the mouth with a cd and put him in the spare tank. Anyhow tips - Slowly and with confidence. He used to be hand tame but since I don't handle him that much he's really regressed. It took about 3 weeks of everyday handling him for 5 to 10 minutes with the glove and petting him with my bare hand. Even when he was tame he wasn't shy about lashing out and nailing me if I moved to fast or came right at his face. Basically I'd handle him until either he or I were stressed and then I'd put him back. Rinse, wash, repeat. You picked the wrong gecko. I have owned leo's, fat tails, cresteds, and tokays and tokays have to be the most aggressive and easily irritated geckos on the market. I would leave your tokay as a display and go buy a leo if you want a lizard you can handle. I do, and Tokay's aren't really the handling sort. Display gecko's only if truth be told.
Get a leo or a fat tail if you want to handle them, I realise you've had him a while, but they don't tame down well AT ALL. Sorry. |
