| What does it take to have a ferret as a pet? | |||||
|
I really want a ferret but my mom doesn't think I can handle one. I am 13 and I have track after school till 5 but only in Spring and homework, so I think have enough time for it. How much do they cost a month or year? And are they really high matenence? I have no idea but I still really want one so help! You are looking at from $500-800 dollars for 2 ferrets and the set up...ferrets are social so you will need two ferrets. They cost about $800 a year to keep, this includes a routine vet check but NOT any vet treatment for illness...vets fees for ferrets can easily run into the thousands. . Ferrets kept indoors in a cage need around 5-6 or more hours of interaction with their owner daily...to run around, play and generally mess around. They are active, intelligent animals, the workload is like having a pet dog. They cost a lot of money and are a ton of work. They also have a strong smell, take a lot of cleaning (a few hours a week), can have a nasty bite (you need to train them out of this) poop everywhere until they are trained (again can take a while) and have a lot of downsides. Great, fun, beautiful animals but your mom might be right. Do a lot more research before you decide. Get the book "ferrets for dummies" its the ferret bible and its amazing. and check these sites out: http://www.ferretcentral.org http://www.hugawoozel.com I have 5 ferrets. you cant put a price on them,my 2 have cost me more than my dogs ever have. one alone cost me nearly ï¿?00 this week at the vets ,and when they bite do they bite, they dont let go,think twice before getting one, Ferrets are $200, the cage is $250. Vet care (if you can find a vet trained in exotics) is expected too, as is a FERRET diet (not dog or cat food). They're expensive. They're also prone to two very expensive diseases that have a surgery of $1,300 to clear up -- Aleutian's disease and Adrenal disease. AND they live for about 7 years, not all that long. Join a few ferret clubs and ask there what people spend on one ferret over the course of a year. Well my friend has a ferret and it has really caused her nothing but trouble they are a lot for a little smelly thing now im not saying you shouldn't get one even though i kinda am i think you should get something else heres some ideas . * Rats [i own one] * dog if you adopt [got one 7 years old] *cat, their fun too! * bunny, can be sweet * Snake [getting one soon] if u have never had one before make sure u get a corn snake * hamster [never liked them] * bearded dragon [own one] these guys are awesome they are social but they dont need to much care would be great for someone who is into crazy cool animals! well i hope this helped! my family, my brain, my animals
