What should i put in my snakes cage?
i am getting a snake soon its going to be a corn snake i have done a lot of research but i don't know what is the absolute best for my pet, like heating stuff could i just use a heat lamp kinda like a bearded dragon's? p.s. i have a bearded dragon. anyway thanks for taking the time to look at this and please reply and i have a few more questions what can i put in my cage? like some plants fake or real? housing cardboard or plastic or maybe wood? im not sure oh and how long can u feed your corn snake pinkie mice before it needs bigger meals? well thats it!
first time snake owner im really excited! i really wanna make it perfect! :) wish me luck!
Hi, I'll start with the lighting, unlike a dragon you don't have to use UVB lighting but you can if you want, the light needs to be very similar to your dragon light in that it is a spot light. I will assume that the cage is about 3 foot and I would use a 60 watt light running through a thermostat so that you can produce a hot spot of about90 degrees, mid tank temp of about 86 degrees and a cool end of 75 to 78 degrees.
Don't try real plants as corn snake destroy them in days, as far as the hide I am in favor of wood.
Feed pinkies, one a week for about 6 weeks then up-size to fluffs for another 6 weeks and keep offering bigger mice every 3 months until he is on adult mice which is what he will eat for the rest of his life, this is only meant as a rough guide as snakes vary in there development but your snake will not choke if you give a mouse that is too big, he will just refuse it.
I always advise someone new to snake keeping to buy a book on the species of choice to refer back to from time to time, good luck, Stef.

sorry but i hope you arent putting it in a cage really?
You can make the cage out of wood kinda like i did in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygE2iD80u/a> i make all of my own tanks send me a message on youtube if u wanna know how i made it
You can indeed use a heat lamp instead of a heat mat.
They dont need UV though, and UV lamps dont tend to put out much heat, so a basking bulb would be the way to go.
Because corns are crepuscular, they may hide a little more away from the light, and you'll also have to invest in a bulb guard so your snake doesnt hurt itself.
They are fine to use though :)

You can use fake and/or real plants. Real plants seem like too much of a hassle to me though haha, and some can be toxic so i just find it easier to stick to plastic plants. Corns are pretty adventurous so you'll want to give yours lots of places to climb and hide; branches and vines are great too.

Housing as in the viv or in hides for the snake?
hides can be literally anything. Expensive resin reptile hides, plant pots, cereal boxes, toilet roll tubes, wine boxes... anything so long as the snake can get in and out without getting hurt and it feels secure.
The vivarium for your snake can be wood, plastic or glass (or any mix of the three!). Two of mine live in plastic faunariums and the other in a big wooded vivarium.

How long your corn eats pinkies will depend on how fast it grows, how well you are taking care of it and how old it is. All snakes are different so there is no set time to move on to the next size feeder. Two of mine are coming up to a year old now and are eating large fuzzies.

Good luck!
Corns are great snakes, so nice choice too

Put a heat pad and heat lamp one one side of the tank and leave the other side as it is. This will give the snake some choice in temperature when it digestes it's food or while resting. Use fake plant bc real ones might have parasites. House your snake in a 10 gallon tank when young and switch to a 20 when it outgrows the 10 gallon (p.s dont go straight to a 20 gallon when your snake is a baby, big spaces scare them and will make them stressed and not eat) You can use ASPEN bedding made especilly for snakes, for bedding (dont use pine, cedar or any other wood bedding, it is bad for your snake) And the rule of thumb for feeding your snake is only feed a mouse the size of the biggest part of your snake.
