| What to bring with me? Taking horse to vet? | |||||
|
I'm taking my horse to a vet an hour away to have her hind end evaluated and possibly injections in her hocks. She's been lame off and on for a few weeks, but is doing a lot better. My trainer and I feel it's best to just make the trek and go see him. Normally, we use our local vet, but since he's highly trusted for lameness problems we're going to him. I've never had to trailer a horse to a vet, so I'm not 100% sure on what to bring. It will be a little over an hour since we're going on a Friday, and there will definitely be traffic. The exam will take a little over an hour, then we're coming home towards the end of rush hour. I know to bring hay, coggins, proof of ownership, extra halter and leads. What else? I am going to put shipping boots and a tail guard on. So that's covered. Aside from your normal shipping equipment, I suggest taking a copy of your horse's medical history for the vet to look at and a note pad and pen for taking notes. Call the vet and ask them. Obviously what you have mentioned is good to bring, however the vet might have something else you need. But the vet will be able to best answer that. If he hasn't traveled much bring water from home....sometimes they get finicky about other water that may smell or taste different. A sweat sheet and a summer sheet would be helpful just in case she starts to sweat up. And a poll guard would do no harm. . A small feed - it is best to give her a small feed and let her rest for an hour or so after the examination to give her time to digest and calm down. You should of course take big barrels of water so that she can have a drink. And it is a good idea to stop every so often to check on her and give her more water if she requires. Also do not forget her passport. Riding instructor - have taken a few horses to the vet in my time! Ask the vet. Don't forget the horse.
