| It's that time of year again..suggestions? | |||||
|
I'm going to my CO-OP this afternoon to get feed, and we'll be looking at fly traps. Is there a specific brand or type you suggest? I've never had to buy them before, since I normally worked at a boarding facility. We will be using them in the barn, run in sheds, feed room and my chicken coop. Other than fly predators, what else can we do to get rid of flies? We use the Trap n Toss fly traps from Farm and Fleet. They are amazing. We put them around the barn to draw the flies away from the run in shelter. . 57 years with horses I know the tape works very well. We used to have one of the traps they would fly in and die, but those were messy to clean. I was told by a old timey trainer that you can take a gallon size zip lock bag and fill it full of water. Poke a hole in the top corner of the zip side, thread a string through and hang it up. The reflection of light in the water is supposed to keep them away. He claims it works. There are also feed through fly controls that make the poop leathal to the fly larvae. That's all I know, though we don't have a barn right now and just use a good flyspray. I have heard good things about the predators though. And they don't look expensive. Fly predators and feed through fly control are the way to go if you have your own facility and can make sure all horses are treated! http://www.smartpakequine.com/charts/ins/a> Above is a list of fly control supplements. They are divided up by controlling breeding flies or repelling biting flies. If you are feeding all horses on the property, it is worth your money to get the supplements that control breeding flies. If some of the horses on the property are not fed the supplement, you are just wasting your money. http://www.SmartPakEquine.com/ProductCla/a> Above is a link to fly predators, which looks super affordable! If you have fewer than 10 horses it is less than $30 a month! You could easily spend that much on fly spray! If neither of these options work, I like the hanging traps that you fill with water- they are smelly and messy, but they work and are pretty easy to dispose of- no cleaning! Good luck! We are all in the same boat on this one! Hi there. I suggest Quik Strike Fly Abatement Strips. I use them in my barn, and they were used in another barn I used to board at. The strips do not repel the flies, but will kill them very quickly. Only thing is that you must sweep up a bunch of dead flies every day! But better than that, is the fly spray system we had installed last year! It keeps the fly population considerably lower than what is normal,however, I continue to use the strips for those stray flies. I hope this helps! I like the Trap 'N Toss. That's what I get. I have 2 of them that I haven't used this year but I used 1 last year and it worked great! It has instructions and everything on there too. Hope this helps! =)
